Biography

Piano Teacher In Cardiff

Daniel Nicholson

BMus (hons) MMus

Daniel began learning the piano from an early age under the Suzuki method in his birth town of Norwich. It was here he developed a disciplined technique and refined aural ability. In his early teens this provided a foundation for him to take up Jazz piano. Consequently Daniel benefited from learning both genres in tandem allowing him to gain a holistic and somewhat unorthodox perspective on how music is composed and performed. The term 'Jazz trained Classical pianist' would possibly be the best description of what this mix of genres eventually synthesised.

Following frequent exposure to performance, competitions and even paid work at an early age Daniel enhanced his wide ranging musical experience immeasurably during his years at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he gained his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Performance between 2007-2013. World class teachers he received lessons off included Fazliddin Husanov, Roger Owens, Michael Young, Richard McMahon, Keith Tippett and Huw Warren.

Alongside a wealth of diverse performance opportunities Daniel was engaged with he began to develop an interest in pedagogy. This perhaps stemmed from the stimulating lessons he had received himself and a constant urge to learn and understand more about how music is created and performed. Daniel researched the psychology of music, the benefits of improvisation in Classical education and sought advice and training for how to begin lessons from the early ages. Upon graduating Daniel had aquired many of the fundamental tools required for what came next.

Between 2013-2017 Daniel moved to SW London with who is now his wife and mother of his three children. His career taken off at an alarming rate with performing and session work alongside a portfolio of teaching jobs and private tuition. After just 18 months Daniel's waiting list for private tuition was 20-30 pupils long so he created Cadenza Music Tuition. This eventually expanded to around 250 pupils spread over 9 tutors covering most of SW London. Lessons were all home visits and the business generally continued to grow.

In 2017 Daniel returned to Cardiff with his Wife seeking a most sustainable pace of life and to eventually set up a family nearer to relatives. He handed over the London business to his group of tutors and set up Cadenza Music Tuition in Llandaff North, Cardiff. Today, with his wife and three kids Daniel teaches from a garden studio with around 65 hugely diverse pupils. He also performs and accompanies occasionally
keeping his playing very much alive. Daniel also composes and arranges music which offers pupils to tailor their lessons even more with an ever growing library of creative and fun piano scores (around 450 by the end of 2026). A recent arrangement of Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto for solo piano was performed in 2025.

In the future Daniel aims to publish collections of his arrangements, expand on a smaller scale the Cadenza Music Tuition provision in North Cardiff, continue to perform and enhance his playing,  become an external examiner with MTB and continue to learn more about how to refine his own teaching practices through creativity, imagination, knowledge and experience.

What Pupils Say

Sarah Redman

Vasilis has been teaching my partner and son to learn piano for a few months now and its been a really positive experience right from the start. Dan was great at setting everything up and his organisation is really professional and efficient. Vasilis is a great teacher, so encouraging and very flexible with our last minute changes! We started off with a keyboard but now with Dans guidance have bought a second-hand upright piano. It so lovely to have the sound of the piano being played whenever anyone feels inspired. I would highly recommend Vasilis, Dan and cadenza music generally.

Telma Domingues

Vasilis started teaching my 6 year-old daughter. He is lovely and very patient with young kids. My daughter likes him a lot and it is always a real pleasure to welcome him at home!

James Lee

I started the piano in January after years of 'when I've got time'. Dan is a brilliant tutor - knows exactly what's needed, is encouraging and able to get you to play better each time. I've had a number of tutors in the past (play the cello) and he is one of the best. I passed G2 jazz in the summer and take G3 soon. Am still amazed at being able coordinate the two hands (very different from the cello) and am really enjoying it. Lessons are online which works well - easier to fit into the day.

Peter Watkins

Started lessons in London and when I moved to York we switched to internet based lessons over webcam. It has been very successful and provided much more flexibility than we had before - we could have a lesson virtually wherever we are.

Dan's ability to hear the music I play and make suggestions means the quality of tuition is not comprimised. We share music online using the excellent new portal he has built.

I would certainly recommend this for anyone who wants piano tuition built around their schedule, which is also fun and based around their music tastes or learning requirements.

Christina Pettican

Dan is teaching my 4 year old how to play piano. He's very engaging and can see when attention is being lost so he moves swiftly onto something else.
My son loves to visit 'Dan the piano man', and he's learned so much in the short space of time with him.

Emily Kirwan

Dan has been a brilliant teacher, helping me pick up piano again after not playing for 12 years. He covers a broad range of music perfectly suited to my level and style and is an incredibly knowledgable, talented, patient and fun teacher. Thanks to his teaching I've rekindled my love for piano and have many happy hours playing. Highly recommended!

Peter Steadman

Daniel gave a very well received lunchtime concert at Leatherhead on Aug 31st, titled From Bach to Jazz. He started by saying he sits somewhere between being a concert recitalist and a jazz pianist - but we were in no doubt that he can call himself a concert pianist. Several noted his lovely, quite sparing, pedal technique. We hope he'll come again.

Plum Lomax

Dan has been amazing helping my kids get through their Grade 5 music theory. He has managed to make it fun and engaging and they really look forward to his lessons.

Cath Mack

Thanks to Ben for a great first ever piano lesson for my 8yo daughter. She has been excited to show me what she learnt and the books she has. She is looking forward to her next lesson and has been practising avidly. "Ben is REALLY nice" was the verdict!
